Today marks the public launch of “Balancing The Scales”, a groundbreaking new documentary from Beaver Trust and acclaimed filmmaker Nina Constable, funded by The European Nature Trust. Narrated by Dame Joanna Lumley, the film is the first in Britain to explore the intricate relationship between reintroduced beavers and the delicate conservation needs of migratory fish populations.
From the creators of “Beavers Without Borders” and “On The Edge”, “Balancing The Scales” brings together leading experts, stunning visuals, and the most up-to-date research. The documentary shines a light on how two critical aspects of freshwater ecosystems—beaver-engineered habitats and migratory fish species—might coexist and thrive in Britain’s evolving landscapes.
Incorporating perspectives from scientists both in Britain and abroad, the film examines how international efforts can inform the British approach. Viewers will hear from experts in Norway and America, both nations with notable beaver populations and long histories of managing fish migrations. Their global perspectives and case studies provide invaluable context to the situation in Britain, offering guidance and consideration to our own approach..
Dr. Rob Needham, Beaver Trust’s Restoration Manager and featured expert in the film, said: “This documentary demonstrates that beaver-driven habitat restoration and conservation of migratory fish populations need not be at odds. By exploring the latest research in Britain and learning from on-the-ground experiences in countries like Norway and North America, ‘Balancing The Scales’ helps us understand how we can move beyond conflicts and work towards healthier, more resilient ecosystems together.”
Director and Producer Nina Constable, whose previous work includes “Beavers Without Borders” and “On The Edge”, said: “I always learn a huge amount on every film project I take on and Balancing the scales was no exception. As I really got into the thick of this film project it reaffirmed for me how conservation and restoration is so much about our ability to communicate, to have empathy and to work together. If we can do that, we can achieve amazing things and help reverse some of the catastrophic declines we are seeing in so many species. Nature has an incredible resilience and power to recover if we give it the space and support to do so.”
Kate Heightman of The European Nature Trust, added: “We are delighted to support this new film and are convinced that beavers have a key role in enhancing natural habitats in river catchments. This is very much in line with our commitment to restoring freshwater ecosystems in the Scottish Highlands, one of the last UK refuges of the endangered wild Atlantic salmon.”
As part of its launch, “Balancing The Scales” will be showcased at five special in-person screenings across Britain. Each event will be followed by a live Q&A session with experts, offering audiences a unique opportunity to engage with those leading the research and fieldwork:

- Friday 7th March 2025, CULTVR, Cardiff, 6pm to 9pm.
- Friday 14th March 2025, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, 6pm to 9pm.
- Thursday 21st March 2025, RSA House, London, 6pm to 9pm
All screenings are free, but capacity is limited. Viewers are encouraged to secure their tickets now to ensure a seat at one of these immersive evenings.
